What Is Vehicle Registration Address And How To Change It?

The law mandates that you have a current driving licence and car insurance policy before you even start driving or bike insurance before riding. While the former is clear, vehicle insurance coverage is necessary to protect your freshly purchased machine from damage and accidents and to cover you against any third-party liabilities you may incur while operating a motor vehicle.

The Public Vehicles Department of India’s registration authority is where you must go to receive your vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC). According to The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988’s 2017 changes, it is prohibited and regarded as a criminal offence to operate an unregistered vehicle without the required registration address.

How Do I Register My Car?

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, you must register your car with the local Regional Transport Office (RTO). It involves adding your vehicle’s credentials to official records after the necessary verification. It facilitates the creation of a connection between the car and its owner.

According to the law, any type of vehicle, including cars, motorcycles, and two-wheelers, must have two high-security registration plates (HSRPs) mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle. The owner or driver of the vehicle may be penalised by the police or other authorities if one of these number plates is missing.

How Come It’s Important?

The law requires registering your car, which is necessary to produce ownership documentation. It is necessary to sell the new car or transfer ownership when you want to sell the car again.

How Do You Get Your Car’s Registration Number?

When you buy the new vehicle at the neighbourhood RTO, the dealer registers it. After receiving a vehicle registration application, the RTO issues a temporary registration number so that the car can be driven on the road for RTO visits and other official duties. The registration certificate for a freshly purchased car is valid for 15 years, after which it must be renewed every 5 years. It is supplied to you after the issuance of the temporary registration number, certifying the ownership of the vehicle in your name. Suppose you must relocate to another state or union territory. In that case, you may use the prior registration address to drive your car for a maximum of 12 months before re-registering it with the local RTO.

How Can I Update My Vehicle’s Registration?

You might need to re-register your car with the new RTO and submit an application for the change in its registration address in exceptional circumstances like the one mentioned above. To do this, you must bring the following paperwork to the local RTO, where you want to transfer the vehicle.

  • Request in Form 33
  • Evidence of a new address
  • Original Certificate of Registration
  • Original RTO No Objection Certificate (NOC)
  • A valid certificate of vehicle insurance
  • Pollution certificate “in control”
  • Authenticated copies of Forms 60 and 61 or PAN cards (as applicable)
  • Pencil Print Chassis & Engine Signature Owner identification
